About

Shelley Hastings

I am a writer, artist, producer, collaborator.

My writing has been published by The Irish Times, Desperate Literature, Thi Wurd, Writing East Midlands, Southword Journal, The Galley Beggar Press, TU Dublin Anthology, Mironline, Dear Damsels, The Whitstable Whistler and Chroma Editions.

I am passionate about the transformative effect of arts in health, with a particular focus on people living with dementia. I’m currently working for dementia charity Resonate Arts. I’m a co-recipient of one of UCL’s 25/26 Trellis Arbor artist commissions. Our project is called Dream Under Microscope. I’m a regular collaborator with Theatre Company 1927. I hold an MA in Creative and Life Writing from Goldsmiths University London.

I recently won The European Writers Salon Prize alongside being shortlisted for the 2025 Desperate Literature Prize where Ottessa Moshfegh said this about my writing:

Glimpses of Her stayed with me long after I finished it. The imagery is tenderly and intelligently observed, the descriptions intimate and graceful. There’s an emotional depth here—quiet but undeniable—carried through music that shifts in mood. It's deceptively simple and deeply affecting

This year I also won third prize in The Moth Short Story Prize 2025, judged by Evie Wyld.

In 2021 I was the winner of the Seán O’Faoláin International Short Story Prize and The Aurora Short Story Prize judged by Jon McGregor. In May 2022 I was a finalist for the Manchester Short Fiction Prize, the UK’s biggest prize for unpublished short fiction. You can read my story here. My stories have also been listed for The Alpine Fellowship, The BBC Short Story Prize, The Primadonna Prize and The Writers’ and Artists’ Prize amongst others.

I enjoy writers who unpick the rage and the shit and the joy of everyday life. I especially love the work of Claire Keegan, Akil Sharma, Ottessa Moshfegh, Elizabeth Strout, Lucia Berlin, Lucy Caldwell, Jamel Brinkley, Yiyun Lee, Deborah Levy, Nicole Flattery, ZZ Packer, Wendy Erskine, Gwendoline Riley, Chris Power, Bryan Washington, Cathy Sweeney, Emma Cline, Patricia Lockwood, Raven Leilani, Kathryn Scanlan, Sheena Patel.

Previously I worked in theatre, as Artistic Associate/Senior Producer at Battersea Arts Centre for over fifteen years, curating and developing festivals and seasons of work including the 2018/19 Phoenix Season. At BAC I supported and presented many incredible artists including Rachel Chavkin and The TEAM, Adrian Howells, Zena Edwards, 1927, Sue MacLaine Company, Chris Thorpe, Nic Green, Touretteshero, Kneehigh, Daniel Kitson, Paula Varjack, Rachel Bagshaw, Breach Theatre and Dead Centre. I have also worked with LIFT Festival, National Theatre Studio, National Theatre of Scotland and Fierce Festival.
